
Winter may seem like a vitamin-poor season, but that’s not entirely true. This is the time of year when citrus fruits shine: fragrant mandarins, bitter kumquats, stunning Sicilian blood oranges, and giant grapefruits. Here are some simple ideas and recipes.
Orange & Berry Smoothie
- 2 oranges, peeled and segmented
- 1 cup raspberries
- 1 cup frozen berries
Blend until smooth.
Green Smoothie
- 1 small avocado
- 1 banana
- 1 orange
- juice of ½ lime or lemon
- 1 bunch spinach (or parsley/mint)
- 150 ml water
Blend all ingredients until creamy.
Citrus Jam
- 1 orange
- 1 grapefruit
- 1 mandarin
- 1 lime
- 10–15 tsp sugar
Peel and dice the citrus, remove white pith from the zest, chop the colored peel. Simmer with 400 ml water and sugar for 1.5 hours. Cool, refrigerate for 12 hours. Keeps up to 2 months.
Salmon & Avocado Salad
- 250 g salmon
- 1 grapefruit
- 1 avocado
- a few scallions
- sprouts of your choice
- 3 tbsp olive oil
- juice of ½ lime
- salt, pepper
Bake salmon cubes 10 min at 200°C / 390°F. Combine avocado, grapefruit, sprouts, scallions, add oil and lime juice. Top with salmon.

Couscous with Chicken & Mandarin
- 1 cup couscous
- 1 cooked chicken breast
- handful pistachios
- 2 mandarins
- 2 tbsp chopped mint
- 2 tsp olive oil
- 2 tsp red wine vinegar
- salt, pepper
Pour 250 ml boiling water over couscous. Mix chicken, pistachios, mandarins, and mint. Season and combine with couscous.

- 10–15 frozen strawberries
- ½ avocado
- 1 banana
- 1 kiwi
- juice of ½ lemon
- 1 tsp flax seeds
Grind flax seeds, blend with other ingredients. Choose your citrus: grapefruit for bitterness, mandarin for sweetness, lime for tartness, or blood orange for richness.

- 3 cm fresh ginger root
- 2 oranges
- honey
Grate ginger, steep in 500 ml boiling water for 5–7 min. Add freshly squeezed orange juice. Serve with honey on the side.
